Oral Cancer – The Importance of Proper Nutrition

National Cancer Control Month is coming to an end, but that doesn’t mean you should stop your efforts to control cancer. Your mouth is one of the most sensitive areas of your body, and it shows signs of nutritional gaps very quickly. As we mentioned previously, an important and effective lifestyle choice that you can make to prevent and control cancer is proper nutrition.

Antioxidants

Last week, we talked about the Importance of Antioxidants. Foods high in Vitamin A like sweet potato are important antioxidants that protect your body and are linked to healthy formation of teeth. It also helps your immune system to function properly and increase protection from bacterial and viral infections.

Calcium & Vitamin D

Calcium is incredibly important for strong bones and teeth, but did you know that Vitamin D is needed to help your body absorb Calcium? Some of the best sources of calcium are dairy products like milk, yogurt and cheese. Not big on dairy? Try sardines, soybeans and dark leafy veggies like spinach, kale and collard greens. For Vitamin D, spend a few minutes in the sun each day. It can also be found in egg yolks, fatty fish like salmon and tuna, liver and fortified milk.

Vitamin C

Have you had your Vitamin C today? This Vitamin is known for its immune-boosting cold-busting benefits, but did you know that it’s also important for your gum health? Vitamin C is a crucial factor in collagen production, which helps the integrity of your gum tissue. Our mouths are constantly barraged by bacteria and viruses, and consuming foods rich in Vitamin C helps the body defend, maintain and repair itself. Studies suggest that deficiencies increase your risk of gingivitis and periodontitis.
